Chapter 9

SELENE

After exchanging numbers and texting Caiden my address, I drive home, heart pounding. It’s been so long since I had sex—a whole year to be exact. What if I forgot how to do it? What if I suck?

My worries aren’t eased by the time I pull into my parking spot. I’m so fucked. Why did I agree to let him come over before reading up on how to have sex? I could have watched a few porn videos or read a few spicy books as a refresher. But no, my dumb ass decided to go in unprepared.

“Hey, Selene!” Caiden calls, jogging up to me as I climb out of my car.

I plaster a smile on my face, even more nervous. There’s no going back now. “Hi, Caiden. Umm …” I wave toward my apartment complex. “Here we are.”

Taking my face in his hands, he pulls me close. “If you’re not comfortable with this, I can go home.”

“No! That’s not it.” I look up at the window that belongs to my apartment, afraid to look him in the eye for fear he’ll know how nervous I am. “Let’s go. I’m on the third floor.”

He lets out a long whistle. “Quite a hike.”

“I fly up the stairs usually.”

“Fly?” he asks with a laugh. “Seriously?”

I shrug. “I have wings. Why not?”

Caiden puts his head in his hands. “Silly me. How did I not think of that?”

His teasing eases my nerves a bit. If he isn’t taking himself too seriously, then maybe I shouldn’t take myself too seriously either. Easier said than done when I’m close to spiraling, but it’s a good mantra to repeat to myself.

Caiden begins his climb up the stairs to my apartment while I flutter ahead of him, my heart pounding. Every flap of my wings brings me closer and closer to having to admit I can’t remember what I’m doing.

“Here we are,” I say, landing in front of apartment 3C and pulling out my keys to unlock the door.

When we step through the doorway, Caiden gasps. “Wow! I love the colors in here!”

I smile, feeling comfortable for the first time since I left the gallery. Talking about my interior decorating style is easy. “Yeah. I can’t do minimalism. Not my thing.”

My apartment has been described as “eclectic” and “quirky” with its walls painted in bold colors and covered in prints and paintings by local artists. If that wasn’t enough, all the corners next to the windows are full of houseplants. My “babies,” as I like to call them.

“I can tell, and I dig it.” He nods in appreciation. “My place is not nearly as cool. I have your typical bachelor pad.”

I snicker. “Do I say something heteronormative like ‘it just needs a woman’s touch?’”

“It could honestly use your touch. And since you’re a woman, then yes. It needs a woman’s touch,” he says with a tentative smile. “That is, if you want to help.”

“Of course!” I stand on my toes to kiss him on his cheek, scratchy from his short beard.
